Safe to say the management team at Maclaren is having a terrible week. On Monday its US subsidiary issued a press statement announcing a recall of every baby stroller it has sold in the United States in the past decade — which means about one million units. The purpose is to install a cover for the stroller’s hinge mechanism, which is sharp enough to cut through a baby’s fingers should they happen to be in the wrong spot as the stroller is opened. In fact, this has happened on at least twelve occasions.
- The company’s employees, who presumably take great pride in Maclaren’s child safety-related mission, are struggling with the sudden awareness that babies’ fingers were amputated because of their product.
- A luxury brand built over the years has been destroyed in one day
- Lawsuits are undoubtedly threatening.
- Channel operations that should be in holiday high gear are consumed with recall execution.
- Marketing mechanisms designed to trumpet a promise of high performance are being deployed to proclaim the opposite.
- The corporate website, overwhelmed by traffic, has been inaccessible.
- And all this is thanks to what may be misuse of the product, not inherent defect.
